In Amazon Wisdom Keeper, Loraine tells the story of her incredible journey from Suriname to Florida and onward as one of connection, disconnection, and reconnection. I found the narrative eye opening, especially because of Loraine's very different upbringing (many of us didn't live through a military coup OR have opportunity to explore, and learn from, rainforests). Yet, it is feeling an outsider in America that gave her the chance delve into other feelings of alienation--within her chosen career, from nature's available wisdom and connection, from the mystical as well as the transformative true self. With powerful questions and heart wide open, Loraine's life reads like a hero's journey. She had the courage to seek and to question everything that mattered most to her. Then she carefully listened for, and fiercely defended, the truths she discovered. Psychotherapists, healthcare practitioners, and all kinds of healers should consider reading this book as a chance to open their hearts and minds to deeper levels of, and alternative, profound approaches to, healing. But to describe this as a psychologist's or merely a healer's memoir would be gravely simplifying the multicultural and multilayered journey of Loraine Van Tuyl's life. I marvel at all she found along the way, and how she is sharing her gifts with the world.
